YOROYORON

「世間一般の人・・・・」という言葉を実際に使う人はその「世間一般の人」の中には含まれない立場から論じていることが多い。
私は制作活動を始めた当初から悲しくも「世間一般の」人間であることを痛烈に感じていた。
それはどんなにそうありたくなくても受け入れなくてはいけないことだと認識していたし、もしそれを受け入れなければ私と私の作品の間には大きな差ができてしまう。

『輿論』を辞書で調べると「世間一般の人が唱える論」となっている。
『私→世間一般の人』であれば、それは「私が唱える論」となる。
もちろん私は「世間一般」の人間の一部であり「『世間一般→私』もまた真なり」とはならないのはわかっている。
展覧会タイトル「ヨロヨロン」とはそういった世間一般に含まれるか弱い私の唱える論であり、『論』自体もいつも正解を求めない、どちらともとれないヨロヨロしたものである私の考えを表現した言葉だ。
そしてそれは頼りないことで「世間一般の人」である観客の皆さまに助けられ完成する展覧会となるだろう。

Most people who talk about the “general public” don’t include themselves in that public.
Sadly, from my earliest involvement with art, I’ve known very keenly that I’m a member of the “general public” —– a fact I must accept, like it or not, or else the gap between me and my artworks would grow too great.

According to the dictionary, the Japanese word “yoron” refers to “public opinion”.
Which, if I’m included in the “public”, becomes “Opinion held by me”. Not that I’m but one small part of that “public”, of course, any more than the “public” equates to me personally.
The exhibition title YOROYORON plays upon such general views, including my own feeble views, always for from any “reasonable” pursuit of right; a neologism I’ve coined from the onomatopoeia yoro yoro meaning “shaky” or “wobbly”. Uncertain as I am, I call upon all “public” viewers, likewise member of the “general public”, to help complete this exhibition.
